Beyond Scratch was started to provide opportunities for children who are enthusiastic about coding. The aim of the project is to create a safe, fun environment in which students can explore exciting projects with their friends, whilst developing their confidence and skills at using computers and programming.
Beyond Scratch currently runs a number of coding clubs located in local schools and at the Beyond Scratch Studio in Grayshott. During the school holidays, many students like to take part in the Code Days - extend projects that last a whole day (See the Events for information about upcoming Code Days). Students who prefer a more personalised learning environment can also request 1:1 lessons. These are particularly suitbale for children with specific learning or support needs and for those preparing for GCSE and A-Level exams.
Drawing upon my experience as a teacher in both primary and secondary schools, I founded Beyond Scratch in response to frequent requests from parents with children at local schools. They were frustrated by the lack of opportunities for their children, who were keen to build upon their interest in computing and coding.
In addition to offering individual lessons, this September I introduced Sunday Coding Clubs. These sessions take place in a new bespoke Raspberry Pi Maker Space Classroom which is located in my home in Grayshott. The club aims to bring like minded students together to have fun whilst building their confidence with coding. Each week the students explore and learn new coding concepts through projects which have been designed to be both highly engaging and relevant.
